After missing the 2017 deadline, state convention centre or ‘Soujanya’ at the Hasting’s House is now ready. Officials said that it’s likely to be inaugurated in June.

The CM had planned this convention centre taking a cue from the Hyderabad House, which is used by the Government of India for banquets and meetings in honour of visiting foreign dignitaries. Banerjee made the plans after she had to hold a meeting with British PM David Cameron in December 2014 at the British Deputy High Commission. She felt that it won’t be right for a head of state to come down to the state secretariat for a meeting.

Accordingly, a grand architectural design for ‘Soujanya’ was planned with a dome structure in the middle and a globe — that will represent Biswa Bangla — on its top. Nabanna officials said that the convention centre was scheduled to be completed by 2017. Last week, the lawns were also decked up with china grass.

The delay in completion of the project, though, hit the state exchequer as more than Rs 130 crore has been spent against the initial project cost of Rs 26 crore, a Nabanna official said.
