The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has started off with the process to come up with fixed fare chart at all designated rickshaw stands in Salt Lake.
The civic authorities have set up a panel headed by corporation’s MMIC Devashis Jana that will look into this entire process.
According to civic estimates, there are only around 1,200 authorised rickshaw pullers plying in the township under the local rickshaw unions but there are thousands more plying without any valid documents. The civic authorities do not have any official figure as to exactly how many rickshaws are plying in Salt Lake and surrounding areas with proper licence.
“We will be coordinating with the civic authorities and will follow the instructions. We will discuss with the civic authorities to come up with fixed fare charts,” said Karunamoyee rickshaw stand union secretary Nirapada Manna.
Earlier last month, Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta had decided to form the panel and had warned the rickshaw pullers union to behave properly following the incident in which a 25-year old marketing executive was allegedly molested, abused, dragged out of a car and forced to touch the feet of a rickshawpuller after an argument over the fare from Karunamoyee crossing to a tea joint opposite Bidhannagar College near City Centre.
