Due to the rising numbers of road accident-related fatalities involving motorbikes, West Bengal government has made driver’s license mandatory for buying two-wheelers.

“It will be mandatory to have driver’s license to buy two-wheelers across West Bengal. The new rule is under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act and no separate notification will be issued. This new rule has been brought to reduce the number of accidents as we want only those people to ply the roads who have a drivers license and thus have some basic knowledge of traffic rules,” transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said.

Sources revealed that the rule was formulated after it was found that many of the motorists involved in accidents over the past one year were either minors or did not possess a license.

Motor-vehicle dealers have also been told to sell the vehicles only after checking the driver’s license of the buyer.

The dealers have been told to send the detailed identity proof of the buyers to the Registering Authority. Only after clearance from the authority, the dealers will be able to sell the vehicles to the buyers.
