The city is likely to see double-deckers once again but those will be open-top buses like the ones seen in London, transport minister Suvendu Adhikari said in the Assembly on Wednesday.
“We have plans to run around four-five double-deckers initially,” Adhikari said while replying to a query in the House.
The transport secretary, Adhikari said, had been to London to survey open-top buses and find out whether the project would be viable in Calcutta.
“We are yet to decide whether the open-top double-deckers, like those in London, will only be used for guided tours,” he said.
Double-deckers were part of the city’s heritage that were phased out during the Left Front rule.
Adhikari also announced that the state government would soon launch night bus services between Siliguri and Jalpaiguri and also between Siliguri and Asansol, Durgapur and Kharagpur.
“We will launch 15 bus routes in the Junglemahal areas. Twenty-two buses will be allocate for these routes in August,” the minister said.
Helicopter services will be introduced between Purulia and Birbhum’s Tarapith.
The minister said “penal actions” would be taken against those found using LED lights in their two-wheelers.
