The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has introduced a newage mechanical street-sweeping machine in New Town. The machine was brought from Italy by an agency engaged by the authorities.
The machine can clean the edges of roads and footpaths, roadside sculptures, street furniture and wipe dust from lamp posts.
Officials said the new machine costs over a crore and has a number of unique features, giving it an edge over the usual mechanical sweeping machines. “The machine cleans roads very fast. The advanced sweeping technique helps the machine reach the edges of the road and also the pavement, which is usually difficult to reach.
Another advantage of this machine is that it can clean the pavements using an extended arm. A water jet projected from an outlet can also clean up the roadside sculptures and street furniture. The jet can also clean up mud from the road surface.
Presently, there are five mechanical road sweeping machines fitted with GPS trackers in New Town.
Officials said New Town was recently recognized as a gold-rated ‘Green City’ by Indian Green Building Council and that the new machine would help in keeping New Town green and clean.
