The much-anticipated Biswa Bangla gate or Kolkata Gate in New Town, which will house a hanging restaurant, is all set for inauguration. The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) is ready with the structure and is waiting to get a date fixed for the chief minister to inaugurate the 55-metre-high structure.
The ring — situated at a height of 25 metres and with a diameter of 220 meters — around the Kolkata Gate will have a restaurant, a viewing gallery, a cafeteria and a curio shop. The ring has the support of four arc-like pillars from four sides. Decorative paintings of luminaries have been drawn on the wall inside the ring with the outer side having a glass facade to have a view of the township. Not more than 100 visitors will be allowed inside the ring at a time.
Hidco authorities said the restaurant inside the ring will start to operate from December 15 onwards. “For the first few weeks, visitors would be able to enter the ring to enjoy the viewing gallery. The restaurant is slated for opening by December 15,” said a Hidco official.
Hidco authorities have made repeated inspection of the structure, work of which had started from early 2017, to ensure safety arrangements. Earlier, there was a plan to fix a globe with Biswa Bangla logo in the middle of the gate but since it accidentally fell off from a height of around 40 meters last year, the authorities decided to scrap the idea of installing it.
The Hidco authorities had engaged IIT experts to conduct a wind study of the structure to assess the stability of the ring during different wind speed. The report was submitted a few weeks back, which certified the structure fit. Hidco had also conducted a structural stability with the help of a US-based Start Up with the help of sensors fixed on the columns. State urban development minister Firhad Hakim also inspected the structure last September.
