The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has planned to set up vehicular underpasses and pedestrian subways at four important traffic intersections on the main arterial road in New Town to improve traffic management system and ensure pedestrian safety.
The four identified spots, where the pedestrian subways and vehicular underpasses have been proposed, are the intersection where the New Town bus terminus is located, the Novotel Crossing, Biswa Bangla Gate crossing and Chinar Park crossing.
The authorities have floated expressions of interest to select a consultancyagency to conduct surveys and prepare a feasibility report on the proposed underpasses and subways.
Hidco officials said in the last few years, load of vehicular traffic has increased manifold on main arterial road and the four traffic intersections have become vital in terms of vehicular and pedestrian movement. Hidco had earlier held talks with Bidhannagar traffic police to discuss measures to be taken up to improve traffic management and ensure pedestrian safety on main arterial road.
After these discussions, the four intersections were identified. Earlier this year, KMDA and PWD opened two pedestrian subways on EM Bypass and VIP Road.
As of now, there is no specific estimate available on the number of vehicles using the main arterial road. The agency will go for a 24-hour traffic survey of all the four intersections and a study on pedestrian movement.
The agency will also conduct a detailed physical survey of all the four intersections and their adjoining areas apart from conducting a topographical survey. They will also have to conduct a survey of the underground utilities at the four proposed locations to ensure that the work does not get hit midway.
Heavy rain had earlier triggered severe waterlogging in vehicular underpasses at Kankurgachhi and Patipukur. So, a survey of the drainage system will also be taken up at the proposed locations.
