St Xavier’s University, New Town, will follow in the footsteps of its parent campus and continue a 73-year-old tradition by introducing a morning course in BCom this year.
A sample survey conducted by the university revealed that 75 per cent of students were in favour of studying BCom in the morning.
“Morning classes would allow meritorious students from business families to go back to their business after college,” vice-chancellor Father Felix Raj said on Tuesday.
The timing would also benefit students who want to pursue professional courses such as chartered accountancy (CA) and company secretaryship while studying BCom. “These students would prefer to attend morning classes and spend the rest of the day preparing for CS, CA and CAT,” the vice-chancellor said.
The 159-year-old institution on Park Street boasts one of the best commerce de- St Xavier’s University, New Town partments in the country. The morning section was launched in 1946.
BCom classes on the New Town campus will be held from 7am to noon. The fledgling university run by Jesuits offers a day course in commerce at present with classes held between 10am and 4pm.
“We have noticed that the students of the university’s existing BCom course are also keen to prepare for CA, CS and CAT. So we decided to launch the morning section,” Father Felix Raj said.
Students of the day BCom course at the two-year old university had appealed to the authorities to start morning classes for them. This prompted the university to conduct a survey among the students which revealed a preference for morning classes.
“Several students from Salt Lake and New Town will benefit from the new course,” vice-chancellor Felix Raj said.
The course will be open to both boys and girls and hostel facilities will be offered.
The morning unit will initially have two sections with 60 seats each. The number of seats may be increased in keeping with the demand, Father Felix Raj said.
Admissions will begin from May after the publication of the results of Class XII board examination results. Classes will start in July.
Admission to all postgraduate courses at St Xavier’s University has started, the vice-chancellor said. Students will be admitted on the basis of their performance in admission tests to be conducted in March..
