The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will start a trial run for the sensor-based parking app that will check availability and non availability of parking slots and help motorists book slots in advance at the parking lots in New Town.
NKDA authorities recently tested how the app was functioning at the parking lot near New Town business club. “The app has been designed by a start-up company. It was tested to find out how the sensors embedded in it is detecting cars and checking whether any parking slot is available. It’s also giving the exact parking location,” an NKDA official said.
“The app will also help motorists to book parking slots in advance. A trial run will be conducted at the parking lot near Tata Medical Centre and the app will be introduced in other parking lots if it’s successful,” the official added.
Officials said that at present, some agencies are using a parking app that only tells how many cars have entered a particular parking lot. “The new app will have a magnetic sensor that will give accurate information on the availability of parking slots in a specific parking lot and help motorists to locate the exact spot where a car can be parked,” an official said.
The authorities, on an average, get around Rs 20,000 per day as car parking fees. The parking agencies use hand-held devices where the time of entry, time of exit and fee payable as per prevalent rate is reflected. Once a car arrives at the entry gate of the parking lot, a magnetic sensor system, which is located below the ground, gets activated. The driver then presses a button to get a smart card where the time of parking is recorded in an embedded chip fixed with it. As the boom barrier opens, the car enters the parking lot.
NKDA presently maintains a number of fee parking zones in New Town, either by themselves or though agencies, at Eco Park, Nazrul Tirtha, Rabindra Tirtha, Mother’s Wax Museum, Eco Urban Village, Tata Medical Centre, Axis Mall and in front of Central Mall.
