 St Xavier’s College (autonomous) will start postgraduate courses in English and political science from the 2019 academic session starting July 10.

This is the first time the 160-year-old college will offer postgraduate courses in arts subjects, Father Dominic Savio, principal of the college, said on Wednesday.

A postgraduate course in Bengali will be introduced on the college’s Raghabpur campus in South 24-Parganas this year.

The college till last year offered postgraduate courses in commerce and in some science subjects on its Park Street campus.

Metro had earlier reported about the college’s decision to launch postgraduate cours- St Xavier’s College (autonomous) es in arts subjects this year. The college decided to offer master’s degree courses in humanities after noticing a huge demand among students, the principal said.

The online application process for admission to MA in English, Bengali and political science, MSc in computer science, physics, microbiology and MCom will continue till May 20.

The application forms are available on the college website.

Admissions to postgraduate courses will be held on the basis of entrance tests, which students from across the country can take.

Aspirants will have to take a 100-mark test, conducted by the college, on May 25.

The entrance test scores will be the sole criterion for admission to all postgraduate courses, the principal said.

There will be 50 seats each in MA English and MA political science.

The college has plans to start postgraduate courses in sociology, chemistry and in economics from next year.

Preparations are on to introduce a master’s degree in education (MEd) in 2020..
