When it comes to detectives, Sherlock Holmes may be the most popular of them all, but Bengali cinema also has its homegrown investigative agents who are no less than legends! While Feluda and Byomkesh have already been brought to life on celluloid, another character from the pages of Bengali literature will soon make way for an adaptation. — the only female detective character in Bengali literature, a housewife turned detective, the iconic Mitin Mashi aka Pragyaparamita Mukherjee, created by novelist Suchitra Bhattacharya.
The film, to be directed by Arindam Sil, is based on the story Hathe Matro Teenteh Din. “After Rituparno Ghosh’s Shubho Mahurat, my film will be the second one on a woman detective. The film is titled Mitin Mashi. While Koel will essay the title character, the film will also mark the debut of Vinay Pathak in Tollywood,” shared an excited Sil. The film’s music will be composed by Bickram Ghosh and Subhankar Bhar is donning the hat of the DoP. The script has been co-written by Padmanabha Dasgupta and Sil himself. “I’m aware that many directors have approached Pradipda (Bhattacharya), Suchitradi’s husband, for the rights. He has promised me that even if he is approached for the rights, the first offer will come to me. It is only after I reject that it will go to anyone else,” he added.
This is Sil’s third detective franchise after the Byomkesh and Shabor series. He said, “Both Byomkesh and Shabor are hard-hitting. Mitin Mashi, however, is the right mix of docile and edgy.” Koel, who has never played a detective on screen, is looking forward to playing the iconic character. “I grew up reading Mitin Mashi stories and it feels great to be able to play the character. The film will be a celebration of womanhood,” she said.
Pradip said if any production house approaches him, he will first run it through Arindam Sil. “We have known him for a long time and I believe he makes good detective films. Himanshu Dhanuka has bought the rights of six stories and Rupa Datta, of three stories. I have the rights of 11 more,” he said. Arunima Ghosh and Riya Banik are also a part of the cast.
