Attending the 64th Railway Week celebrations in the city on Wednesday, Metro Railway GM P C Sharma indicated that women’s security will be a priority on Metro trains.

He also said the construction for the East-West Metro Corridor was on in full swing and Phase I — between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium — was set to be commissioned in the next few months.

“Providing security to women is a challenging issue. In 2018-2019, we detected 12 cases of crime against women in the Metro Railway network and 22 offenders were handed over to the police. In addition to this, 4,035 cases of nuisance, spitting, smoking and littering were registered between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019. A fine of Rs 10,46,750 was realized from the offenders,” Sharma said, indicating that authorities have their task cut out in keeping the station premises and trains on the E-W Corridor clean.

The GM also said that efforts were on to complete the link to Dakshineswar by 2019-2020. This short stretch missed its deadline by several years due to delay in the removal of encroachers.

Sharma spoke on construction along the Noapara-Airport stretch. “Construction of the airport underground yard is under way. Work on all 294 piles and the 1,215m diaphragm wall has been completed. At all 24 stations, 1,620 employees have been trained on use of fire suppression equipment,” he added.
