New Town will soon get its first dedicated community centre. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started working on the project that would be completed within the next one and half years.
The community centre will be built on a little over one acre of land and will be a three-storey structure. It will be set up close to the Biswa Bangla Gate, by the Main Arterial Road in Action Area 1C. According to the plan, the centre will have banquet halls on the first and second floor and an open auditorium and a dais on the ground floor.
“At present, there is only one community hall above a market complex, but there is no community centre. The centre will also serve as a town hall where citizen interactions and similar activities can be organized, ” an NKDA official said.
Residents of New Town said there are no community centres in the township like in the neighbouring Salt Lake where there are community centres in almost every block.
“Now, community functions can be organized only at big hotels in New Town. It would be very helpful if a library is added to the centre,” said Surovi Mukherjee, a resident of Jatragachhi.
“It would also be beneficial to have such a dedicated facility as there the area lacks a common space for community activities. Having a gym there would be an added advantage,” said Kaustav Dey, an IT executive and resident of Action Area-1B.
NKDA officials said apart from having banquet halls and an open-air auditorium, there will be a number of commercial outlets on the ground floor.
