IndiGo airlines is set to flag off its operations to Hong Kong with the introduction of direct daily flights from August 20. It will become the second airlines after Cathay Dragon to offer a direct flight to the popular tourist destination. “Ticket sales for the flights to Hong Kong are already under way and so far, we have had a promising response,” said an airline official.

Additionally, for the first time, Kolkata is on the verge of getting a direct flight to Vietnam, one of the most popular travel destinations. IndiGo airlines is planning to start operation later this year.

Along with Hanoi, the airlines also has plans to start direct flights to Guangzhou in China and Yangon in Myanmar around the same time. “Flight operations to Hanoi, Guangzhou and Yangon are on the cards,” said an official.

Last month, the airline’s chief commercial officer had said that the airlines was hoping to start operating flights on the Kolkata-Hanoi route from October 3. On Saturday, an official said they are yet to decide the date of commencement, but confirmed that the airlines is in the final stages of getting the requisite government approvals.

Tour operators in Kolkata, however, were apprehensive of the flight to Hong Kong because of an automated system of pre-arrival registration that rejects online applications allegedly without assigning any reason. But they welcomed the proposal for new flights to Vietnam and Guangzhou.
