City mayor Firhad Hakim has come up with an innovative idea to accord reception to VIPs or guests who will attend functions to be organized by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation functions in future by presenting them with saplings and plants, instead of flowers to show a mark of respect. The idea struck the first citizen recently while working on a plan for taking up a green drive for the city.
According to Hakim, presenting flower bouquets to guests in a civic function looks nice but was a complete waste of civic resources as majority of the guests who receive such bouquets leave them on the dais once the function is over. “A bouquet of flowers looks nice when I get it while I attend government functions. But I believe it is a complete waste of resources as at the end of the day, the bouquet has no value and thus finds its place in a bin. But presenting a sapling or a plant will have a long-lasting effect as it will go a long way in making the city green,” Hakim said.
Mayor has already taken up the matter with the KMC secretariat department senior officials and asked them to arrange for adequate saplings and plants for each programme hosted by the KMC itself.
“We can start the initiative and set an example for other civic bodies or state government departments to follow. One day it will become the norm and benefit the city in its green drive,” Hakim said.
A KMC parks department official on Wednesday said the department was mulling the idea of enhancing the capacity of the civic body’s nurseries for supplying adequate number of plants and saplings for government functions. “We have a central nursery at Tallah and several other nurseries in boroughs. We need to enhance the capacity of these nurseries for supply of saplings and plants as desired by the mayor,” the civic official said.
Currently, the Tallah nursery supplies saplings to citizens before monsoon and during winter when the civic body organizes flower shows across the city.
