The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has planned to set up three smart shelters for bus passengers in New Town under the Smart Green Cities scheme.
The shelters will come up in place of the existing bus stands in front of Coal Bhavan on the main arterial road in Action Area 1A and on both sides of street number 374 near Aliah University and Hajj House in Action Area IIA.
The structures will have solar panel roofs so that they can be run on clean power at night. There will be LCD displays inside the shelters where commuters will get to see the arrival and departure time of buses along with the fares and distance.
Hidco will soon select an agency to prepare the architectural design of the proposed shelters. The project cost will be estimated later.
At present, Hidco runs three electric AC buses on the inner roads of New Town. The buses have become popular with over 1.8 lakh tickets sold since their introduction in May last year. The new shelters will add to the initiative to develop a modern and smart environment-friendly public transport service in New Town.
Earlier, Hidco had installed exercise equipments at a few bus stops in New Town for commuters to use free of cost till their buses arrived.
Hidco has been working to develop an environment-friendly public transport system. The authorities have also planned to set up a bicycle parking lot adjacent to the DLF subway in Action Area I. A dedicated bicycle track will also be set up along with renovating the second rotary in front of Novotel in Action Area I.
