An Evacuation Mock Drill was conducted in the Metro tunnel on the down line between Rabindra Sarobar and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations on August 25. It was conducted to upskill the metro staff to evacuate passengers during emergencies in the minimum possible time from the tunnel.

Evacuation of the passengers from a rake was carried out through the cabin of driving motorman and conducting motorman after taking a power block. After evacuating the passengers, the power block was cancelled, the third rail was charged and thereafter the rake was sent to Kavi Subhash carshed.

The drill also emphasised on seamless coordination between different departments of the metro railway. The objectives of this programme were to upgrade fire extinguishing and passenger evacuation skills of the metro staff so that they could act quickly to save valuable life and property in case of an emergency, said an officer.

On December 27,2018 evening an AC train caught fire in the tunnel, triggering panic among trapped passengers. Commuters repeatedly kicked the toughened glass windows to break them in a desperate bid to escape the smoke chamber. One person fractured his leg while jumping out. Several fell ill after inhaling smoke while others were in shock and trauma. Around 47 people were taken to nearby hospitals. This was not the first incident as a similar incident had occurred eight years ago.
