Fastfood giant Burger King India is opening its first outlet in the city on Friday as part of their expansion in east India. Besides the outlet at Quest Mall, the group is planning to open standalone restaurants at four or five places in and around Kolkata in the next few months. For each outlet, Burger King is hiring 25 or 30 persons — trained by their internal team.
Rajeev Varman, CEO of the company, told TOI: “Three more new outlets — one each at Acropolis Mall, South City Mall and Lake Mall — are also on the cards.
The second largest burger chain in the world is so serious about its Kolkata foray that it is bringing in at least two exclusive dishes — double whopper (five-inch) and smoking crunch whopper — which will be available exclusively in the city.
“About six months ago, we have done a massive consumer immersion exercise in Kolkata. We interacted with the youngies and fast food consumers and took their feedbacks which we took up with the research and development team to launch the two new Kolkata-specific products,” Varman told TOI.
The launch of various other products, including rice bowl, are also in the pipeline. “As per our trade analysis, the food market is big in Kolkata where non-veg items are mostly up for grabs. We are investing around Rs 2.7 crore on each outlet with a target for returns in next four or five years,” he said.
The group has also set up a distribution centre on the outskirts of the city.
