In a bid to promote environment-friendly initiatives as part of the green cities mission, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has selected 10 residents of New Town to act as ‘eco ambassadors’
“The endeavour is to involve citizens to create awareness on what they can do at the individual, family and community levels to adopt green initiatives like segregate waste, stop plastic use and harvest rainwater,” said an NKDA official.
An event was organized at Rabindra Tirtha on Saturday where the eco ambassadors were selected from 757 residents who had started waste segregation at home.
“We are planning to hold an event in front of the Eco Park Taj Mahal on September 15 where all the 10 eco ambassadors will be felicitated and given a cash prize of Rs 1,000,” said an official.
NKDA will also ask the ambassadors to address ‘eco anxiety’ among residents. “Eco anxiety is a state of mind, in which people experience anxiety over environmental issues. The eco ambassadors will be trained by experts to address this issue,” another NKDA official said.
