New Town has received a happiness quotient rating of 6.4 out of 10 from IIT-Kharagpur in its first assessment of the joint-collaboration project between the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) and IIT-KGP to develop New Town as ‘Happy City’.
Hidco authorities are trying to implement the suggestions given by IIT-KGP like setting up more playgrounds, having more health care centers, bicycle lanes and others to get a rating of 8 out of 10 in the second assessment rating.
Hidco had initiated the Happy City project in collaboration with IIT-KGP two years back to determine how to increase the happiness quotient of New Town residents by taking up several initiatives to improve the quality of life of residents.
“The rating already shows the happiness index of New Town is higher than its neighbouring Salt Lake and Kolkata. Many initiatives have already been taken and we are taking up more such new initiatives to get a rating above 8 out of 10,” said a Hidco official.
As per the Happy City project, the happiness quotient of residents living in a particular township is determined by how various civic facilities like transport, school, hospital, safety and security are being provided by the civic authorities of the township.
Officials said IIT-KGP authorities have found that Hidco has already done a lot interventions to improve the quality of life for residents in New Town, but more could be done to achieve higher rating.
Following suggestions from IIT KGP, Hidco has been taking several environment-friendly initiatives, which would increase the quality of life of the residents.
“A lot of initiatives have already been taken like the ‘Snehodiya’ senior citizens habitat where all modern facilities have been set up for elderly citizens to spend quality life. Places like Eco Park, Nazrul Tirtha, Rabindra Tirtha have been set up to enrich socio-cultural life, a cricket, a football stadium and a golf range have been set up and more playgrounds will be set up to develop sports culture in the township. Initiatives like dedicated bicycle lanes, smart eco friendly bus and cycle stands, introducing electric-run buses, electric vehicle charging stations, setting up primary health care centers and more such initiatives are being taken up to improve the quality of life of the residents,” said a Hidco official.
