Kolkata is known to host the best of cultural programmes. But it has also come forward to spread awareness on social issues time and again. Since long, the American Center has been making sure that the city reciprocates to global concerns on a local platform. Taking the initiative forward, the centre has organised a Women’s Empowerment Fair on Friday. Apart from the US Consulate members, the event will see various NGOs from the city taking part in the proceedings.
The fair will stress on putting up a fight to end human trafficking and gender-based violence. The programme will host trafficking and acid-attack survivors and children who have survived such incidents. It will also provide opportunities to the survivors for an understanding of better healthcare and job facilities. “Gender empowerment and anti-trafficking are two of the focal issues at our US Consulate in Kolkata. This mela supports the fight to end human trafficking and gender-based violence by supporting NGOs committed to these efforts. We invite socially conscious consumers to join us in buying handicrafts and in making a difference in the lives of vulnerable women and girl,” said Monica Shie, director of the American Center.
Dawn Manske, a social entrepreneur from the US and founder of Made For Freedom, which fights human trafficking, will be present at the event. Her innovative social enterprise uses fashion to empower survivors of sex trafficking. The products are made by women rescued from sex trafficking and those coming out of marginalised situations, informed an official of the American Center.
The event is scheduled to start from 3 pm and the inauguration will take place around 4 pm. The venue will be open for guests an hour prior to the event, so that they can take a look around.
