Member, mayor-in-council (parking) Debasish Kumar on Tuesday reiterated KMC’s plan to try and reopen a portion of the parking lot below the New Market patio along Lindsay Street ahead of Durga Puja.
“We hope to reopen the parking facility on the second basement before the Pujas. It can accommodate 270 cars. We will open it in phases, beginning with the provision of parking parking 70 cars,” Kumar said.
With barely three weeks left for the Pujas, it has become a real struggle for the rush of shoppers to find a space to park their vehicles in the vicinity. At the same time, shopkeepers complained that many buyers had been avoiding New Market owing to the parking space problem.
Though providing parking space for only 70 vehicles would not exactly solve the problem in and around New Market, any addition was welcome, said SS Hogg Market Traders’ Association. Parking in the area was especially a problem as the slots on Bertram Street and Humayun Place were completely encroached on by hawkers, a member said. “Many shoppers with cars have stopped coming to New Market due to the parking problem. Unless the KMC acts on the issue, this heritage market will die a slow death,” said a functionary of the market’s trade association.
