One of the displaced residents of Bowbazar, Jayanta Seal, on Wednesday received the Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia that chief minister Mamata Banerjee promised to give him for his daughter’s wedding. He received the cheque from mayor Firhad Hakim.

Seal’s daughter Trisha is due to get married in January, but their house at Durga Pituri Lane was one the first structures to fall as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) hit an aquifer, triggering large-scale subsidence.

Seal has already received the Rs 5 lakh one-time payout that KMRC has been disbursing for the displaced families. In addition to that, the chief minister had promised another Rs 5 lakh for those whose daughters are due to get married, post the disaster. Seal said: “The CM had also asked KMRC to pay us another Rs 5 lakh for my daughter’s wedding. Even as we got the state government’s payout, KMRC is yet to give its share of contribution for the wedding.”
