In a bid to unclog the traffic mess in Behala in the run-up to the Pujas, KMDA is likely to throw open two new Bailey bridges at Karunamoyee and Tollygunge Phanri and restart movement of vehicles on Chetla Lock Gate Bridge from Monday. According to a senior KMDA official, the twin Bailey bridges will be opened at 11am while Chetla Lock Gate Bridge — shut down last month owing to its heavily corroded and ravaged condition — may be reopened in the evening following a round of inspection.
“The two new bridges are ready and Chetla Lock Gate Bridge is stable after maintenance and is capable of carrying the load of light vehicles,” said a KMDA official.
However, till late on Sunday, senior officers of the local traffic guards were yet to get a copy of the completion certificate of the bridges and a formal nod from the agency to start traffic movement along them from Monday. “The new bridges will streamline the traffic movement during Durga Puja. With the Majerhat bridge collapsed and Satya Doctor Road closed, there is immense pressure on the arterial roads to enter and leave Behala. The new bridges will certainly ease the chaos to a large extent,” said a traffic officer.
But during a visit to the bridges on Sunday, TOI found the approach roads to the twin bridges far from ready, with labourers putting last-minute touches to the structures. “The approach towards Tolly Club from the Karunamoyee-end is still too narrow and an accident can occur any time once cars start using it. Moreover, we have a pandal on the road. If cars start plying along the road here, what will happen to it?” asked Ajay Ghosh of Narendranath Ghosh Lane near the Karunamoyee bridge.
The Izatullah Lane bridge, connecting Tollygunge Phanri with BL Saha Road near Mahabirtala crossing was still under construction on Sunday. The authorities had put up barricades on both sides of the bridge to stop the cycles and bikes that had already started accessing the structure.
However, the one bridge that cops think will solve the bigger part of the New Alipore and Chetla traffic mess is the Chetla Lock Gate Bridge. “There are several big-ticket Pujas in this area that draw lakhs of visitors. If the bridge is opened, we can channel small vehicles and two-wheelers along it, otherwise there will be huge chaos on the main thoroughfares,” said a senior traffic cop.
