KMDA asks Kolkata Municipal Corporation to reconsider Quest, South City FOB plans

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has asked the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities to reconsider the alignments of two foot overbridges (FOBs) — one near Quest mall and the other near South City — as KMDA also plans to set up flyovers along the same route.

KMC have plans to set up two FOBs, one across Syed Amir Ali Avenue near Quest Mall and another across Prince Anwar Shah Road near South City.

While KMDA has cited no apparent issue over the FOB proposal near South City, the authorities have informed KMC that the FOB near Quest Mall will not be feasible as it would collide with the KMDA’s proposed flyover and its downward ramp near Quest Mall.

KMDA officials said that as for the KMC’s ROB proposal near Quest Mall, KMDA already is working on a plan to set up a flyover from Park Circus to Ballygunge that will move over Syed Amir Ali Avenue and pass by Quest mall. Rites has already been engaged to prepare a detail project report. There is an additional plan by KMDA to set up a grade-separating ramp from the proposed flyover towards Gurusaday Dutta Road, which is not very far from Quest mall. So, it would not be feasible to accommodate an FOB at the spot, even if the height of the proposed flyover is increased.

KMDA officials said KMC can instead come up with a plan to set up an underpass in place of the FOB at the spot. The KMDA authorities have already appraised the KMC special commissioner on this issue, KMDA sources said. “Instead of a FOB, setting up an underpass near Quest mall will be more suitable,” said a KMDA official.

As for the KMC’s proposed FOB near South City, KMDA sources said the FOB can be accommodated here by increasing the height of the proposed flyover. However, KMC should approach RITES before finalising the FOB proposal as RITES are presently preparing a detail project report for the proposed flyover project conceptualised by KMDA.

Presently, RITES is preparing feasibility and DPRs for a number of flyover plans conceptualised by KMDA. Among the proposed flyovers are the one from Park Circus to Ballygunge, from Prince Anwar Shah Road Jibanananda Setu to near South City, flyover from Garden Reach to Brace bridge and proposed flyover on EM Bypass over Ruby intersection. The authorities also plans to set up a few FOBs on the EM Bypass at Chinrighata, Ruby and Patuli.
