Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee was felicitated by Mohun Bagan on Wednesday. The club’s assistant general secretary Srinjoy Bose and finance secretary Debashis Dutta met Banerjee at his residence in the afternoon and honoured him with the life membership of the club, along with a green-and-maroon scarf, a club jersey bearing his name and a First Day Cover commemorating Mohun Bagan’s historic IFA Shield triumph in 1911. Banerjee was also handed over the book ‘Sonae Lekha Itihase’ — written by Subir Mukherjee — which traces and entails the history of the club.
It was exclusively reported by TOI on October 19 that Mohun Bagan officials had written to Banerjee, expressing their desire to felicitate him.
“I feel very proud,” Banerjee is seen saying in a video released by the club. “I had watched matches of both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal from the stands. I have watched many matches. But, beyond watching the matches, I have not been able to follow other developments. My brother does that.” He also promised to share a picture of him wearing the jersey.
Banerjee is expected to be back in the city in January. “I will go and watch a match. Do you have matches in January?” he enquired.
The Bagan officials were delighted to honour Banerjee. “He said he was initially a Bagan supporter but later a cousin influenced him to be an East Bengal fan,” said Dutta.
