The Kolkata Police is set to introduce the state of the art technology to crack down on shoplifters, pickpockets and snatchers, using Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the latest round of NCRB 2017 data released last Monday, Kolkata has emerged as the safest city in the country.
Police officers at Lalbazar said they are set to install facial recognition software across 25 crossings in the city just before Kali Puja and Diwali.
The software will monitor the crowd and help reduce crimes like chain snatching and pickpocketing at busy places. The software will have the photographs of known criminals and the control room will get alerts if the software can match the wanted criminals, moving on the streets, with the photographs.
“If the CCTVs help us trace the criminals, this software will help the police get alarms about the movements of the suspects and this will prevent crimes from being committed. This is going to change how we look at crimes in crowded areas, especially the market places. If the project is successful, we will slowly introduce the software all over the city and increase the total number of such cameras to 100,” said a detective department official.
To start with, 34 specified IP cameras will be installed at Presidency Correctional Home, Quest Mall, the crossing of Park Street and Free School Street and the crossing of Park Street and Rafi Ahamed Kidwai Road.
Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma accepted that the plan was at a “ripe stage” but he said that details would be shared only after the process was initiated.
