Sukumar Ray’s crazy creations, Abol Tabol and Ho Jo Bo Ro Lo, and many others, have an eternal fan following among children and adults alike. So, naturally the legend’s 132nd birth anniversary on October 30 makes it a special occasion for many. One such initiative by Kobitar Class, a school of recitation, voice drama and stage anchoring in south Kolkata, always looks forward to celebrate and remember the famous poets and writers. They are also going to celebrate the birthday of the master of laughter, Sukumar Ray, at a café in the city.
“Sukumar Ray is always in our minds. Not only the newcomers in the recitation circle but also the veterans can learn many things from his works. On his birth anniversary, we are trying to enact some finer emotions of life based on Ray’s poems and stories. Some students are getting dressed as Kumropotash, Katukutuburo and the legendary Pagla Dashu. Let these modern cafe cultures also include our basic emotions and long-cherished culture,” said Raja Das, mentor of the class.
His iconic characters like Pagla Dashu, Kumropotash, Boka Buri and Bapuram Sapure will come alive through the performances of the students. Kobitar Class will try to celebrate life through the mesmerising and happy words of the legend. “I am excited and happy to be a part of this very creative endeavour. All the student of Kobitar Class are going to showcase Sukumar Ray’ unforgettable presence through his creations. So, we will meet and share a very joyful time together with the great himself inspiring us,” said Amrita Roy Chowdhury, a student of the class and participant at the event.
