The Kolkata Police — along with Swasthya Bhawan officials — launched the first formal review of the security system that was put in place at the government hospitals five months ago, following the NRS Hospital agitation.
The exercise, which started on Tuesday at the RG Kar Hospital, will cover other medical Colleges like NRS Hospital and SSKM Hospital till November 11. After the review, a comprehensive report will be prepared and sent to the government, suggesting further changes. “We found some minor issues with the private security set up here. These are being addressed,” claimed a source.
Police sources said the aims of the exercise are threefold. First, to identify whether the standard operating procedures (SOPs) is being implemented. Secondly, ascertain if the private and police mechanism were working in tandem and lastly, identify those who are involved in dereliction of duty.
The police have decided to send a senior nodal officer to all Patient Kalyan Samiti meetings to discuss security aspects. Cops also asked the hospital administration to report any breach of security so that FIRs can be filed under stringent sections.
The final audit report will depend on the input of DC (combat) Colonel Nevendera Singh Paul, who is also the nodal officer on behalf of the police.
