The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has removed overhead cables from two streets in Sector V. They will remove the cables from more streets in the IT hubs in phases, according to officials.
The streets that are free of the cables are Street No. 13 from Wipro via College More to Godrej Waterside and Street No. 17 from the IT&E department office building via Webel More to Swasthya Bhawan.
Officials said a large number of overhead cables has been hanging from street light poles in Sector V for a long time. These cables not only create visual pollution but also make the street poles unstable as their foundations are not designed to carry such extra load. Besides, cable services, including internet connection, get disrupted whenever storms or cyclones strike the city. When trees are uprooted, they bring down the cables that in turn pull down some lightweight poles.
To get rid of such problems, NDITA officials are working to lay underground cable ducts. The officials are holding meetings with telecom firms and agents to relocate the overhead cables into the ducts, which are being laid under pavements, in phases. “The process of removing overhead cables from more streets is going on. The work to relocate all the cables in the underground ducts will be done in phases,” said a NDITA official, adding that the move will make cable and internet services in Sector V more stable and less prone to interruptions.
In neighbouring Salt Lake, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has, however, failed to remove the overhead cables and wires that are hanging dangerously from poles and wrapped up in trees. The civic authorities failed to take proper measures to get rid of the cable mess, though they had once planned to do so.
