New Town will get two new police stations — one near Eco Park and the other near Shapoorji Pallonji housing complex — on Wednesday. The existing New Town police station that covered a huge area of action areas I, II and III till Tuesday will be trifurcated.
The state government has cleared the trifurcation of the New Tow police station in a cabinet meeting held in August this year.
The Eco Park police station has come up in a new building beside the Eiffel Tower replica inside Eco Park while the Techno City police station will start operation from a rented house at Akandakeshari in New Town near Shapoorji Pallonji Housing Complex.
“The new police stations will help in better policing and better patrolling of the township. Our motto is to ensure that each police station covers a radius of 5km, ” said LN Meena, the Bidhannagar Commissioner.
The Eco Park police station will have 36 policemen who will be headed by an inspector. It will cover 10 sq km area that includes Eco Park, City Centre II, Amity University and an upcoming IAS – IPS housing complex near Akankha crossing.
The Techno City police station with 30 policemen will cover a larger area with major city hubs like Unitech Infospace, Alia University, Tata Medical Centre and a number of housing complexes, including Shapoorji Pallonji and Uniworld City.
The existing New Town police station faced major challenges in covering both urban and semi-rural areas that are governed by gram panchayats. Besides, many housing complexes are located too far from the police station and residents complain of laxity in policing.
