The state urban development and municipal affairs department has prepared a proposal to set up green city at the 100 acre land in and around Alipore and Presidency Correctional Home.
Alipore Correctional Home has already been shifted to Baruipur and efforts are on to relocate Presidency Correctional Home. After the shifting of Presidency correctional home the state will get free land and the government wants to use this land effectively.
“The department has engaged a consultant for this task. After studying the green city proposal, the consulting agency will submit a report which in turn will be placed before chief minister Mamata Banerjee for her approval.
The green city proposal will be taken forward only after receiving the nod from the state secretariat,” an senior official of the state secretariat said. The heritage structures of the buildings of these two homes would be kept intact during the process of setting up the green city, he added.
The ‘Green City’ mission envisions implementation of sustainable strategies to achieve overall city development. The urban development department is the nodal agency for the development for Green City mission in Bengal. The focus of the Green City is on creation of sufficient eco-space, sustainable water reservoir system and modern transport with low emissions.
State urban development and municipal affairs minister Firad Hakim had told in Assembly last year that all the municipalities had submitted their green city plans to the department and accordingly, funds were given. The state government submitted the ‘Smart City’ proposal for New Town, Bidhan Nagar, Durgapur and Haldia in June 2015 to the Ministry of Urban Development. In December 2016, the state government opted out of the ‘Smart City’ mission of the Central Government and initiated the ‘Green City’ mission.
