The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to convert some of its primary schools into English-medium ones. mayor-in-council member Avijit Mukherjee, who oversees the KMC education department, said on Friday that four Bengali- and Hindi-medium schools at Garden Reach will be the first batch of such schools to be converted.
“We have decided to offer quality education to the students of the KMC primary schools. This move will help the students in their higher education in the future,” said Mukherjee. The civic body will extend the facility to the students of other primary schools in phases. There are over 350 KMC-run primary schools across the city.
Sources in the KMC education department said the civic body had roped in some educationists to guide the teachers to impart lessons in English before deciding on the conversion of Bengali, Hindi and Urdu medium schools.
