Marriot International unveiled its fourth property in Kolkata, keeping pace with the real estate growth in the east and north-east. The new venture, Fairfield, launched on Friday near Biswa Bangla Gate in New Town, targets to rake in revenues from mostly business class guests visiting the IT hub of the city round the year. It is also the hospitality major’s first select-service hotel in the city.
In an interview with TOI, Abhishek Sachdev, hotel manager of Fairfield, said, “We are positive about business growth in the new township adjacent to the city. Fairfield being 11km away from the Kolkata airport and 20km away from Howrah railway station, we are expecting more business-class guests tripping to the city for short duration. Fairfield is the first venture of our group under the select-service category.”
Currently, the Marriot group is running 18 hotels across India and more than 1,000 hotels world over under the banner of Fairfield. However, the launch of the new hotel made the group sink their teeth into the three segments of hotel business — luxury, premium and select-service.
The group had started off hotel business in the city three years ago when had come up with JW Marriot off EM Bypass. “This was a venture in luxury category. And we left no stone unturned for expansion of our business. We diversified our business and opened Westin in Rajarhat, which comes under the premium category. ITC Sonar also is our franchise. Besides Courtyard, another venture of our group in Siliguri also gives us a thriving business,” he said.
Though the distance between Westin in Rajarhat and Fairfield in New Town is less than 1 km, the group believes that this will not affect the clientèle for either of the hotels. “With Fairfield coming under the select-service category, it will be cheaper than Westin,” said Sachdev.
