Chitpore Canal Circular Bridge will remain closed for around 10 hours every night from Thursday to Monday due to repair works by KMDA. On Wednesday, TOI had reported that KMDA had asked for a shutdown for at least 5 days.
Cops, however, said they wouldn’t be able to keep the bridge closed beyond December 30 since the area will see huge traffic movement on New Year due to the Kalpataru Utsav at Cossipore. The Tallah Bridge is likely to be dismantled on the first week of January.
Cops have suggested alternative routes for vehicles — especially trucks — travelling in the night. “South- bound vehicles, coming along Cossipore Road, will be diverted through P K Mukherjee Road-Manmatha Ganguly Road and north-bound Vehicles will avail KVV Avenue. They will then be diverted either through Bhupen Bose Avenue or through Bagbazar Street till completion of the work, cops said.
The KMDA is in a hurry to complete the work since this bridge is going to be a crucial link once the Tallah Bridge is dismantled. KMDA sources have asked for closure between 10pm and 7am. KMDA has informed cops that the work is likely to be completed in two parts — in the first half, the agency will concentrate on removing the extra bitumen from the flyover deck, and in the second half, they will work to strengthen the bridge so that it can bear the extra load of buses and cars. Senior KMDA officers held extensive meetings to chalk out the work schedule before approaching the cops, said sources.
