The city’s first ever night marathon, exclusively for women, is going to be organized by the Bidhannagar Police in January. The message that the police are trying to send out to people by organising the marathon is that the city is safe for women.
The organisers started toying with the idea after a series of rape cases in different states rocked the country. Protest marches against the crime were witnessed across Bengal too. The date is yet to be decided but it is likely to happen on a Friday night. The police were originally planning to hold the marathon on a Saturday night date.
On all Sundays of January, the Bidhannagar Police will be on compulsory duty already and not be available for such a special public event on the previous night. Hence, the organisers have decided to hold the event on Friday night.
As per the organisers’ plans, the marathon will have two categories — five and 10 kilometres. It will be open to all women aged 18 years and above. “We are targeting young working women who are often forced to work till late at night. The women of this age group fell prey to brutal attacks in the past,” said Kunal Agarwal, DC (headquarters), Bidhannagar.
The route is yet to be finalised but the marathon will start from the Bidhannagar police commissioner’s office and cross Sector V. “That is the zone where a large number of young women work at night in the IT firms, so the marathon should cross Sector V where these firms are mostly located. It will be meaningful if we are able to involve young IT employees in the run,” said Agarwal.
The run targets to get at least 2,000 participants and the police have already approached several corporates, both in the public and private sectors, for help. Looking at the success of the event, this might get a permanent place in in Salt Lake’s event calendar.
