City’s first transgender couple, Tista Das and Dipan Chakraborty, got their marriage legalized at the registrar’s office in Sodepur on Tuesday.
The couple has come a long way since falling in love three years ago during Dipan’s sex reassignment surgery in 2016. It has been a long journey for the couple who has been brave in crossing several social hurdles together. The duo finally tied the knot in August this year while on the last day of 2019, they got the much needed legal stamp on their ‘Rainbow Wedding’.
Tista said there was a special reason behind choosing December 31 for the registration. “We wanted to start 2020 as a legally married couple and that is why we chose the last day of 2019 for this special event,” Tista added. The couple had to get all of Dipan’s new documents to make the process smooth.
“I already had my documents as I had undergone the surgery 15 years ago. It took us a little time to get Dipan’s documents as he underwent the surgery in February,” said Tista, adding that Dipan’s family has finally accepted their relationship.
Tista was born as Susanto while Dipan, born as Dipannita, was initially ostracized by his folks for changing the gender. None from his family had attended their wedding on August 5.
However, things changed and on December 14, Dipan’s parents had come down to Kolkata to meet the couple. “Initially, they couldn’t recognize Dipan as this was the first time they were seeing him since his surgery in February. However, it was an emotional moment. On January 7, I will be going to my in-law’s place in Guwahati for the first time. I am really looking forward to it,” Tista added. Tista’s maternal uncle and two other friends were the witnesses for their registry.
