The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has planned to set up a new bridge over Circular Canal, moving parallel to the RG Kar bridge that would have a ramp to lead vehicles towards Chitpore or Kolkata station. The authorities have prepared the design of the proposed bridge and plan to float tenders soon.
Last year, KMDA came up with the plan to have a new canal bridge that would connect Canal West Road and Kolkata Station Road to reduce traffic load on RG Kar bridge, also known as Gaznavi Bridge that connects Shyambazar with Belgachhia.
KMDA sources said that topographical and soil surveys have been conducted in the proposed area. “The proposed bridge will help divert vehicles across the canal to Shyambazar or Belgachhia. It would also help decongest RG Kar Road and reduce load on RG Kar bridge,” an official said.
There will also be a 300-metre grade-separating ramp from the bridge that would come down towards Kolkata station.
The structural health audit of RG Kar bridge revealed that its condition was stable, but its load-bearing capacity had reduced. Additional bitumen layers from the bridge’s surface will be removed to reduce the extra load. “This will be done before PWD starts dismantling the Tallah bridge, as RG Kar bridge will then have to take immense vehicular pressure,” an official said.
The authorities recently conducted repairs on the Chitpore circular canal bridge, but the Chitpore rail yard bridge is in poor shape. Experts said that the bridge is beyond long-term repairs and could be dismantled soon. Both the bridges will start taking additional vehicular pressure once Tallah bridge demolition starts.
The authorities are also working on plans to set up three bridges over the canal that flows at Julpia on the southern fringes of the city this year.
