The state public works department (PWD) has started the work of setting up two underpasses on VIP Road — one at Lake Town and the other at Dum Dum Park. These underpasses were planned to ease the movement of pedestrians at the two busy crossings.
Tenders for the work were floated in July last year while a detail survey of the locations was conducted by the officials to check the underground utilities. Both the underpasses will be constructed with the advanced box-jacking technique.
“No traffic restriction would be required on the road as the technique would create underground tunnels with minimal damage to the surface,” said an official. However, the service road off VIP Road may be blocked and a pedestrian traffic plan may be required during the work.
According to plans, the underpasses will be about 68-metre long with 6.5-metre width and 2.7-metre height. The construction cost of the two underpasses has been pegged at Rs 23 crore. The long-term plan behind the underpasses is to dismantle the old foot overbridge at Lake Town crossing for the proposed flyover from Dakshindari to Dum Dum Park. The PWD officials have already prepared a project report for the flyover plan and are waiting for approval from the state cabinet.
