The KMDA, from February 15, is set to start floating tenders for repairing six flyovers and bridges that underwent structural health audit last year. Starting with Baghajatin rail over bridge (ROB), which the authorities have listed as the top-most priority among the six bridges, the tenders will be floated for work on Kalighat Setu, Sealdah flyover, Aurobindo Setu, Chingrighata flyover and Bankim Setu.
Officials said the reason why it was taking so much of time to float the bridge repair tenders was this was the first time the work was being done with so much attention to detail.
“The plan is to take up repair work without having to shut any flyover. Only a partial closure may be necessary if the situation demands,” said an official.
Repairs on Kalighat Setu will entail fixing the corroded pillars and boosting its load-taking capacity while 10 to 15 bearings of Aurobindo Setu need to be replaced. Additional load and bitumen layer will be removed from Sealdah flyover and Bankim Setu and urgent repair and maintenance work will be carried out on Chingrighata flyover.
