The city will soon have a unique art street in New Town. A stretch of road adjacent to Gate No. 1 of Eco Park is being developed where artisans and artists will be able to showcase their creations and sell them. The initiative is likely to start next month.
Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has initiated the process to empanel artists and allied organisations who would display their works.
An official said, “There are such streets in many European nations where artists showcase their works. Some artists have shown interest in such streets where they can show their creations, like paintings, drawings, handicrafts and sculptures, to the people.”
Initially, artists will be able to showcase their products only on weekends as the Eco Park opens. A token payment of Rs 1,000 will be charged. The art street will be divided into two zones. The empanelled artists and organisations will be allocated display rights by rotation in either of the two zones every few months.
Hidco had earlier organised a design hackathon and a number of street art furniture were installed on important traffic intersections on the Main Arterial Road. As part of this, two owl sculptures were fixed on the Main Arterial Road near Eco Park. Now, it is known as Pnechar More (the Owl Crossing).
