With a Metro station coming up and the Baghajatin rail overbridge going for a major revamp, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has decided to carry out development of the western-side EM Bypass service road from Ajaynagar to Baghajatin railway crossing.
The authorities have floated tenders to engage an agency for the work, which is scheduled to start from early next month. A project cost of about Rs 1.5 crore has been estimated for executing the work, which has to be completed in three months.
The development work includes setting up proper pavement with railing and fences. It would also have channels for proper dispersal of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Officials said with the Metro station coming up near Ajoynagar, the traffic movement will go up on the western side of the service road.
At present, the service road is not properly managed with vehicles moving on both direction. While some stretches have construction debris, other places have bikes lined up on both the sides of service road.
“The service road stretch needs to be revamped, keeping in mind the present and future traffic scenario,” said a KMDA official.
KMDA has already drawn up a plan to develop traffic infrastructure of EM Bypass stretches, specially where the Metro stations are coming up. To start with, the authorities are consulting the traffic department and bridge experts to set up a vehicular underpass, foot overbridge and a new flyover between Hyatt More and Dhapa crossing.
IIT Kharagpur has already been engaged to prepare a roadmap for proper traffic dispersal around Chingrighata.
