Director Subhrajit Mitra and his team unveiled a teaser for his upcoming film, Avijatrik — The Wanderlust of Apu at the Kolkata International Book Fair recently. The film is based on the concluding part of the original novel, Pather Panchali, by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. The cast and crew of the film including Arjun Chakrabarty, Sreelekha Mitra, Ditipriya Roy, Barun Chanda, Ayushman Mukherjee, Bickram Ghosh and Ujjaini Sengupta, among others, attended the event.
The teaser launch was followed by a chat session moderated by Sujata Sen. Talking about how he prepared for the film, Subhrajit said, “When I first conceived the idea of making Avijatrik, I read the original novel several times. I tried to understand the character arc, the description of each scene and the emotions the author tried to convey. In the process, I also ended up reading other novels of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay and I hope to adapt them to films too.”
Bickram, who has scored the music for the film, said he consciously tried to emulate the legendary OST of the Apu Trilogy composed by Late Pt Ravi Shankar, as much as possible. He spoke about how he has used only acoustic sounds of sitar, sarod and flute to recreate a similar effect. Supratim Bhol, the cinematographer of the film shared how difficult it was to recreate 1940s Calcutta in 2019, while shooting the film last year. “It was a very challenging task for us to recreate the 1940s Calcutta on screen. The film has been entirely shot in black and white. We have all put in our hard work in the film and hope the audience appreciates it,”
