The alignment of the proposed flyover from Chingrighata to New Town will have provisions for entry and exit ramps at Sector V. Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is finalizing the flyover alignment keeping in mind the crowd disperal at Sector V and Karunamoyee Metro stations.
“There are several vehicles that take Salt Lake Bypass from Chingrighata and enter Sector V. The ramps that are being planned will help all Sector V-bound vehicles from Chingrighata to take the flyover to reach the IT hub. Similarly, EM Bypass-bound vehicles from Sector V will be able to take the ramp and move all the way to Chingrighata. The ramps will also be helpful for those using the Sector V Metro station,” a bridge expert said.
As for the existing Chingrighata flyover, it would be dismantled once the proposed flyover construction from Captain Bheri to Sector V is completed. IIT-Kharagpur has been engaged to assess the traffic scenario at the Chingrighata crossing and to come up with the most feasible layout for the intersection.
The proposal to have a flyover from EM Bypass to New Town was mooted long time back to decongest the busy Chinrighata crossing and Salt Lake Bypass. The earlier proposal was to set up the flyover over the wetland but the plan was scrapped and the authorities came up with a few alternatives. In the plan that has almost been finalized, the flyover will start from Captain Bheri on EM Bypass, take a right turn from Chinrighata to move over Salt Lake Bypass, parallel to the Metro alignment, enter Sector V from Nicco Park and then move towards New Town. “The proposed alignment is being finalised looking into all the best possible options so that no waterbody gets affected,” said an official.
Once the authorities zero in on the alignment, a detail project report will be prepared and an environment impact assessment will be done to get the final approval. RVNL has already granted a no-objection and conditional certificate to KMDA to go ahead with the flyover plan.
