The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) is engaging a consultant to prepare a project proposal for either a ropeway system or a personalized rapid transit or a light rail transit (LRT) system from New Town’s Action Area III to the Biswa Bangla Gate on the Narkeldanga intersection of the main arterial road in Action Area I. Officials said the objective was to have better connectivity between Action Area I and III, and a synchronized transport system with the new Metro alignment.
At present, the three Action Areas are connected to each other by four arterial roads. Hidco has introduced electric buses and the Metro construction is on parallel to the main arterial road. However, with the Metro alignment passing only through Action Areas I and II, Action Area III is yet to connected with the Metro and other public transport.
“Action Area III is a huge place with several important institutions. There will be a huge surge of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in this area in the near future and keeping this in mind, we must have a plan in hand for an advanced urban public transport system which will be able to synchronize this traffic with the Metro alignment. This will ensure better and faster transportation from Action Area I and II to Action Area III,” said a Hidco official.
“The new transport system will likely be in the form of a ropeway or a personalized transit system like podcars. It could also be a light rail transit system. The selected consultant will have to carry out detailed survey to decide on the most feasible transport,” said a Hidco official.
The bidders competing for the job must have at least two years’ experience in setting up transportation infrastructure projects in the country or abroad.
