As an extension of the observance of International Women’s Day on 8 March, Victoria Memorial Hall (VMH), Kolkata, is opening a mother and child room (Lactation Room) on Friday, March 13, at 4 pm. This room, adjacent to the Entrance Hall of the VMH, is where nursing mothers can take a little rest in a private space while breastfeeding their children.
This is part of our ongoing effort to make the museum more inclusive and friendlier to people with various challenges. As the then Director-in-Charge, I had the privilege of inaugurating such a room in the Indian Museum in May 2017. Since then the introduction of a similar facility in the VMH has been in the pipeline, and it is now finally happening, much later than it should have, but – hopefully – not too late, said VMH secretary and curator Jayanta Sengupta.
At the same time that day, we are also inaugurating our latest ‘Object-of-the-Month’ exhibition, a Rajput miniature of Rani Padmini (Padmavati) binding a ‘turban’ on her head, surrounded by her companions. This painting, just out of our reserves, will be on display in the Prince Hall on the southern side of the museum, he added.
