The Kolkata Police is all set to introduce 75 more Face Recognition Cameras (FRCs) in the city. There are 25 already in operation in the city thus taking this state-of-the-art modern security feature to 100.
The entire funding will be from the Nirbhaya funds that hope to make the city safer for women. “Areas and especially crossings frequented by women will get the first priority,” explained an officer at Lalbazar. He added the proposal received a go ahead from the centre after which the funds were allocated.
Lalbazar said they are looking at 6 megapixel or higher cameras (with GPU) that can do three things – one: automatically select and output optimum face picture, two: instantly compare captured face pictures with those in picture libraries using artificial intelligence (AI) and three: trigger alarm if alarm action is configured. A total of Rs 3.5 crore has been earmarked for the project.
Earlier, this software was installed at 25 crossings in the city just before the festive season last year. The software will monitor the crowd and help reduce incidents of chain snatching and pickpocketing at busy places. Fed with photographs of known criminals, the control room will get alerts if the software matches these photographs with the wanted criminals moving on the streets.
