The state urban development department plans to dispose of the garbage on the dumping ground in Pramod Nagar, between Dakshineswar and the Kolkata airport, using biomining to process and develop the area as a park within three years.
Biomining is the process of using microorganisms to extract metals of economic interest. The move will give relief to the residents of the area under the South Dum Dum municipality from pollution.
State urban development minister and KMC mayor Firhad Hakim on Sunday said, “Many have suffered for long due to this huge dumping ground. The waste of five municipalities is dumped here.”
Hakim was speaking at the inauguration of a 30 MLD sewage treatment plant set up by KMDA for South Dum Dum municipality.
“There are three ways to improve the waste disposal system — door-to-door waste collection through segregation, using dry waste as fuel and separating garbage that can be crushed and used for road construction. The problem of Pramod Nagar will be solved within the next three years,” Hakim added.
An animal crematorium is also coming up in the area. The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is also using biomining to dispose of the waste at Mollar Bheri.
