It seems like even the coronavirus pandemic can’t deter Bengalis from planning ahead for Durga Puja. And cases in point are two orders from Italy and four from the US received by Kumartuli-base idol-maker Kaushik Ghosh. “I’ve received altogether 13 orders from overseas Puja organisers this year. Apart from those from Italy and the US, there are also orders from Autralia, Germany and Canada. Eight of these idols are ready for dispatch, but given the current situation, we don’t really know when we’ll be able to send them overseas,” said the 35-year-old, who makes idols exclusively for expatriate Bengalis.
Kaushik usually ships more than half his orders overseas by March-end. But this year, he hasn’t been able to do that because of lockdowns all over the world. “But all my clients have assured me that they will take delivery though no one knows exactly when. I was really worried when the coronavirus pandemic took a turn for the worse, but my clients seem to be sure that things will get better by October,” he said, adding that he’s a bit worried about the lack of new orders.
Debaditya Mukherjee, a Germany-based IT professional and an organiser of a 40-year-old Durga Puja there, told us that they have ordered the idol and are hoping to get it within a few months. “Bengalis all over the world are hoping the pandemic ends by Puja and we are no different. We, too, are looking forward to celebrate the grand festival again this year,” he said.
