For many people in Kolkata, their biggest hope is to survive the coronavirus menace and make a new beginning by the times Durga Puja arrives. Many idols are already made and some are ready to be shipped abroad as soon as the lockdown is lifted. But Baghajatin Tarun Sangha has thought otherwise. At this difficult time, the Sharad Utsav committee of the club has decided to remain at the service of the people at the expense of their puja plans. On the auspicious day of the Bengali New Year, they distributed masks made by women members of the club and bottles of drinking water to the police and administration to raise awareness on safeguarding against the pandemic.
Club members were on road for this initiative from 8 am. “Baghajatin Tarun Sangha is trying to stay beside the people during this crisis. We want to create more awareness. With the assistance of our chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, we wanted to do something for the citizens. The members of our women’s committee have made 1,000 masks from the expenses of our Durga Puja committee. On the morning of Poila Baishakh, we distributed the handmade masks among many. The women’s committee members distributed packaged drinking water to health workers and to the policemen who are working day and night for our safety. Actress Priyanka Sarkar also collaborated and aided us in this indeavour,” said Amit Basak, a club member.
